Structure Fire: NC 18 1-16-09
Fri. Jan 16th 2009

George Hildebran Fire/Rescue was dispatched for a structure fire on NC 18 South in the area of Mineral Springs Mt. Rd. The caller told dispatch that he thought his attic was on fire. Deputy Chief Craig arrived on scene of a one story wood frame residence and reported smoke showing from the roof. He also requested that all personal vehicles be parked near NC 18 due to the limited amount of parking near the structure. Firefighters were transported from the highway down the long driveway during the first few minutes of the incident by the EMS supervisor. This proved to be a huge benefit and we greatly appreciate the assistance. The first attack crew entered the structure to find heavy smoke; fire was located in the walls around a fireplace with a wood stove piped into it. The crew opened up the walls to find a large amount of fire in the void spaces around the chimney. The main body of fire was knocked down while vertical ventilation was started around the chimney. The sub-freezing temperatures made roof operations more hazardous it also made the entire incident more difficult to mitigate. After an extensive overhaul process the house was turned back over to the homeowner with the majority of the damage confined to the living room area.
