Structure Fire with Double Fatality
Mon. Jan 24th 2011

George Hildebran Fire/Rescue responded to a large fully involved structure fire in the early morning hours of January 24, 2011. The fire department was initially dispatched for a large brush fire then later change to an occupied structure fire. Engine 1 arrived to find two large structures almost completely on the ground with several vehicles also burning. A small home-made bridge had to be crossed with E-1 to reach the structure. The bridge had been pre-planned and found to be safe to cross prior to the fire. A water supply system with tankers off loading into a drop-tank that supplied E-3, E-3 then supplied E-1 through a supply line that crossed the bridge. When personnel arrived and began firefighting operations a large oil barrel ruptured on the C-side of the structure. One room that had been added to the B-side of the main structure was still standing. Firefighters forced entry and entered this room to search for occupants and found none. Several attack lines were put into service to extinguish all the fires. The bodies of two occupants were found in the structure after many hours of searching through the debris. George Hildebran was assisted by South Mountain FD, Enola FD, Salem FR, Cookesville FD and Mountain View FD. Burke County EMS, Burke County Fire Marshall’s Office and the SBI also responded.
